I'll be Fine, I have Horses.

During a recent conversation with my brother he mentioned he was concerned about me moving to an island far away and not having Brent at home full time. He was worried that I would be lonely. “Don’t worry I have horses” I responded. He laughed and said that only works for so long.
It wasn’t until after the conversation that I realized he was thinking that the horses would be my friends and although they are my friends and great company, this is not what I meant by my statement. Horses can do many jobs in our lives. Most of us think of a horse's job as what we do with them for sport such as jumping, driving, dressage, working cows, you get the picture.

My horses are not just part of my exercise program, or there for sport they help me in many other ways. What I meant when I told him I would be okay because we have horse was that our horses will help us break the ice. All I have to do is go riding and I’m sure I’ll meet horsey people, and from there I might even make a riding friend.

Our horses have not only helped me feel less socially awkward but they have also taught me better ways to conduct myself. Through all their nonsense and drama I’ve learned how not to participate in the hullabaloo and to just watch and let things unfold until it’s time to step in and make a suggestion to better the current situation. I’ve learnt how to keep cool, and work with the situation in front of me. I often wonder how non horse people cope with things when they haven’t been taught to relax in the face of potential disaster.
The more I put the lessons our horses have taught me into practice throughout the rest of my life, the smoother and more enjoyable I find life.
Horses make me go outside when it’s gross out. Considering we won't be able to free feed them the same way we have been here I have to be vigilant about making sure they get their rations 2-3 times a day no matter what the weather is like. During the several decades of horse ownership I’ve found myself dreading the outdoors due to some yucky looking weather. For the most part I’ve learned that weather usually looks worse from the window.
Horses have a way of making life better, simply by being horses, they teach us to be better humans.

Happy Horsing Around

Fantastic post..yes .. I especially resonate with "having to go outside in yucky weather"..or for me "cold weather", and then you get your boots and coat on...and as you walk across the snow, with the stars shining or the sun setting .. you feel the peace in the air .. and the sound of the horses neighing and munching on hay...Ahhh...that's a relaxation meditation in and of itself. ;) Yee-Haaahh horse sister.
